Solomon Kings FC forward Jez Lofthouse has praised his team’s performance but admitted their ongoing struggles in front of goal have been the story of their season so far, following a goalless draw against New Zealand side South Island United on Sunday in Port Moresby in their OFC Pro League clash.
Kings dominated possession and created the better chances throughout the match but were unable to convert their opportunities, settling for a 0–0 result.
Despite the frustration, Lofthouse said there were plenty of positives to take from the performance.
“Yeah, I’m really proud of the way the team performed. Once again, it seems to be a bit of our story of the season so far, not being able to find the back of the net,” Lofthouse said.
Kings had a golden chance to break the deadlock in the first half when Gordon Iro was brought down in the box, earning the side a penalty.
However, Lofthouse’s spot kick was saved by South Island United goalkeeper Steve Van Dijk.
“I had a great chance in the first half with a penalty that I really should score,” he admitted.
Despite the missed opportunity, Lofthouse was named ‘Man of the Match’ for his performance and said he was pleased with the style of football Kings are producing.
“The football that we’re playing, it’s just really good. I’m just really proud of the performance, but we really need to start putting the ball in the back of the net,” he said.
Kings have scored just once in four matches so far, a concern Lofthouse acknowledged, while remaining confident the goals will come.
“We love trying to get forward and be as positive as possible. Like I said, we’re just struggling to find the back of the net at the moment, but once it clicks I think we’re going to be really dangerous in this league.”
Meanwhile, Kings conclude their second circuit on Saturday when they meet league leaders Auckland FC at 12:30pm (SBT) at the National Football Stadium in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
