The Government of Solomon Islands, through the Ministry of Police, National Security and Correctional Services, attended an Open Day at the Lofung Border Outpost in Shortland on Friday 7th November to highlight the progress and significance of this vital security and development project.
The event brought together traditional leaders, community members, youths, church groups, government officials, and international partners, including representatives from the Australian Defence Force and supporting contractors.
The Lofung Border Outpost symbolizes the government’s dedication to safeguarding national sovereignty, enhancing law enforcement capacity at the Western border, and promoting peace and unity within the border communities of the Shortland Islands.
This project is a key component of implementing the Solomon Islands National Security Strategy and the Border Security Strategy, aiming to build a secure and resilient nation.
The Outpost is a flagship infrastructure investment supported by the Australian Government and implemented in partnership with companies including Reeves International, Hall, and Icon. Beyond strengthening national security, the facility is positioned as a gateway for legitimate trade, sustainable economic development, and local empowerment.
Early benefits are already evident through increased employment, local business opportunities, and service demand in the community.
The Government calls on local communities to embrace the project, foster peaceful coexistence by resolving disputes amicably, and utilize established mechanisms, such as the Border Liaison and Mediation Framework, to maintain harmony and promote constructive cooperation.
The Ministry assures a continued government commitment to completing the Lofung Border Outpost and ensuring it serves as a lasting legacy of partnership, security, and shared prosperity.
Joseph Arebonto, Principal Border Security Officer, emphasized, “The Lofung Border Outpost is more than just a building — it is a promise of safety, opportunity, and progress. Together, let us guard our borders, grow our economy, and build a stronger Solomon Islands for future generations.”
The facility is designed as a multi-agency platform, integrating the efforts of the RSIPF, Customs, Immigration, Biosecurity, and other relevant agencies. This collaborative approach aims to improve coordination and responsiveness to emerging challenges at the country’s western frontier.
The Lofung Outpost is a priority project under both the National Security Strategy and National Border Security Strategy, which identify the Western border region as crucial for trade, movement, security cooperation, and the safeguarding of national sovereignty.
