Makira Ulawa Province and Solomon Islands Red Cross Society on Tuesday 15th April 2025, signed a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
The MOU, which aims to establish a strengthened relationship and a greater collaboration in promoting humanitarian assistance, disaster preparedness and community resilience was signed by the Premier of the Makira Ulawa Province Stanley Siapu and the Solomon Islands Red Cross Society National Board President Roy Oeta.
Making his remarks during the occasion, the Makira Ulawa Provincial Premier Honourable Stanley Siapu stressed that the Province is truly delighted in being able to have this memorandum of understanding with the National Society.
“When the Makira Ulawa Provincial Government Policy advisor notified us about the arrangement made for the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Provincial Government and the National Society, we were excited and looked forward to it”, Honourable Siapu said.
“This document is a binding document in that, it leaves no room for excuse for either party not to help communities in their preparedness for disasters but also through helping our vulnerable people by responding to the effects of disasters on them and their communities across the province.
“Similarly, this document also gives both parties the opportunity to work collaboratively in preparing communities for disasters and being able to respond whenever disasters strike.
“Likewise, it shows our collective commitment to build on resilience of our local communities when they are faced with disasters,” Mr. Siapu added.
Meanwhile, SI Red Cross Society President Mr.Roy Oeta also gave his remarks, thanking the Makira Ulawa Provincial government for seeing it fit in agreeing on the document and also further taking this step towards actually signing the historic memorandum of understanding.
“On behalf of the Solomon Islands Red Cross Society and the SIRCS Makira Ulawa Provincial Branch, I am truly honoured to be able to have this historic moment in signing the memorandum of understanding between the province and the National Society.
“This is important in that, it is a document that will guide how we coordinate in ensuring we serve our people in the humanitarian space well. The signing today is special given the presence of the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) Country Cluster Delegation in the Pacific Head Finau Heuifanga Leveniand the IFRC National Society Development Manager Juan Garland”, Mr Oeta added.
The signing is officially witnessed by the Makira Ulawa Provincial Government Provincial Secretary Mr. Peter Trena and Solomon Islands Red Cross Society Secretary General Mr.Gregory Dime and with participation of staff and members of the Solomon Islands Red Cross Society.
