The Makira Ulawa Provincial Government (MUP) has reaffirmed its connection to a 6.8-hectare piece of land in Okea, North Guadalcanal, through a cultural exchange ceremony.
The land was acquired by Makira Ulawa Province many years ago but was left unattended during the 1998-2001 ethnic tensions.
The ceremony, which involved the exchange of chupu, symbolized renewed ties and shared understanding between Makira Ulawa Province, Guadalcanal Provincial Executive, and local landowners.
This marks an important step towards redeveloping the Okea land, which will contribute to economic growth once developed.
Makira Ulawa Province Premier, Honorable Stanley Siapu, acknowledged the past leaders of both provinces for their foresight in initiating the land arrangement.
“This occasion not only reconnects us with our land but also strengthens socioeconomic and cultural ties between our two provinces,” he said.
The ceremony was attended by Guadalcanal Premier Willie Atu, representatives of the Ghaobata House of Chiefs, landowners, and local youth groups, demonstrating the provinces’ commitment to unity, cooperation, and mutual respect.
