MALAITA Province is planning to undergo significant push to strengthen its agricultural sector, with backing from international partners.
This was revealed last week by Malaita Provincial Secretary Erick George during a press tour organized by the Japanese embassy.
Speaking to the media, George highlighted the province’s commitment to agriculture as the backbone of its local economy.
“We want to expand our investment in agricultural livelihoods,” he said, noting discussions with the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to establish agricultural hubs that will equip small-scale farmers with essential tools and machinery.
“This government, the Malaita Economic Cooperation Transformation Government, believes in transformation, and that transformation starts with our people,” George added.
“Agriculture is our fundamental investment. It is the productive sector we want to invest heavily in, complementing it with tourism and fisheries.”
George also highlighted the role of quality infrastructure in attracting investment and praised Japan’s ongoing support for Malaita.
He cited the soon-to-be-handed-over hospital as a key development that will help create a healthy and productive workforce.
With a provincial population of around 176,000, George stressed the importance of engaging communities in economic activities to ensure inclusivity.
“We want to involve our people in these economic activities so that no one is left behind,” he said, underscoring the government’s vision for inclusive growth.
The press tour highlighted the province’s strategic approach to development, combining agriculture, fisheries, tourism, and robust infrastructure with international partnerships to create sustainable economic opportunities for its people.
