MALAITA Province will mark its Provincial Day celebration this coming Friday, with festivities already underway in several wards across the region.
In the lead-up to the official celebration, Wards 3 and 4 kicked off their local events on Wednesday, featuring sporting competitions such as women’s volleyball and men’s soccer.
These activities aim to bring together communities in celebration of Malaita’s provincial identity.
Community members, including men, women, and young people, have been invited to participate in the events, which are designed to foster unity and pride across the province.
Martin Lagwai, Chairman of the Ward 3 Development Committee, said his team has organized sports competitions at Gwaunaru’u to mark the occasion.
“Since the provincial government decided to decentralize the celebrations to the ward level, we took the initiative to organize these events for our communities,” he said.
Malaita Provincial Assembly Member for Ward 2, Benjamine Baetalua, also shared details about his ward’s planned celebrations, which will take place at Kilusakwalo Village.
He said the highlight of the day will be cultural performances led by students from Kilusakwalo School.
“This will be the first time our ward is celebrating Provincial Day with such cultural displays, and it’s a great opportunity to promote and preserve our local traditions,” Baetalua said.
This paper understands that other wards across Malaita have also scheduled events beginning today, each planning their own unique ways to celebrate the province’s big day.
