A young man in his late 20s lost his life following a tragic logging accident at Tabriz in North Vella La Vella, Western Province.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at the Tomea Logging Camp, operated by SKT Chi Tai Logging Company.
The victim, who was working at the site as part of the stevedoring crew loading logs onto a logship, sustained fatal injuries when a log struck him in the lower back and hips, causing severe internal damage.
According to initial reports, the deceased was on a log barge arranging logs when a crane operator attempted to lift one of the logs.
Witnesses said, the log slipped from the crane’s grip and swung in the direction of the crew member. He attempted to get out of the way but was struck before he could escape.
He was rushed to Gizo Hospital by boat later the same day, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.
Sadly, he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday night after spending three days in critical condition.
The deceased hails from Roviana Lagoon in Western Province.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
