A man has lost his life after a vehicle he was travelling in experienced brake failure, rolled back and struck him during an incident at a logging site in Rendova, Western Province.
The incident which occurred last week happened when a Land Cruiser transporting several passengers attempted to climb a steep hill.
According to reports, the vehicle developed brake failure while ascending the hill and began reversing downhill.
As the vehicle rolled back out of control, most of the passengers jumped out to save themselves.
However, the deceased, who was a local trustee, also jumped from the vehicle but was accidentally struck when the LandCruiser rolled over him, causing critical injuries to various parts of his body.
The victim was rushed to Helena Goldie Hospital in Munda for emergency treatment but was later referred to Gizo Hospital due to the seriousness of his injuries.
Reports confirmed that the man was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Gizo Hospital wharf.
Police are believed to be investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The operation is carried out by SKT Logging, a Malaysian-owned company,
