An elderly man from Rannoggah, Western Province currently residing at Saeragi village in West Gizo, Western province has gone missing at sea during a fishing trip on Monday night.
According to reports, the old man went fishing with his son in-law traveled separately in a dug out canoe when they encountered strong winds.
The son in-law managed to return safely to Saeragi same night but the old man failed to make it back.
“We certainly think that the paddling canoe that the old man was using is not big enough to withstand the strong wind and the waves hitting him.
“Unlike his son in-law is using much more better canoe that can avoid waves coming in the canoe,” a Saeragi villager told Solomon Star in an interview on Tuesday.
Relatives confirmed that the missing man had been living with his two daughters at Saeragi prior to the incident.
Police in Gizo have launched investigations and are working with community members to locate the missing fisherman.
Meanwhile, the Gizo Health Authority has advised the Saeragi community to refrain from fishing and selling fish at the Gizo market until further notice.
