PRIME Minister (PM) Jeremiah Manele told a news conference in Honiara late Friday afternoon he would remain in office until such time Parliament thinks otherwise.
The statement delivered was also intended to highlight the achievements and successes marking the one-year anniversary of the GNUT, as well as to address concerns about leadership amidst the current political instability.
“This week marks one year since the formation of the Government for National Unity and Transformation (GNUT) on 29 April 2024.
“This is a significant milestone for our coalition government—formed through the unity of OUR Party, Solomon Islands People’s First Party, and Kadere Party.
“We came into office with a clear vision centered on unity, transformative economic development, and prosperity for the Solomon Islands,” he told the news conference, also attended by politicians.
“Today, I would like to take this opportunity to reflect on our journey so far. I will share some of the key achievements we have made over the past year, acknowledge the challenges we have encountered, and reaffirm our unwavering commitment to building a peaceful, united, and prosperous Solomon Islands.
“Our work is guided by four foundational pillars:
● Unity and Stability
● Economic Transformation
● Infrastructure Development
● Human Capital Development
Unity and Stability
“Our government was founded on the principle that political stability and unity are prerequisites for progress. Over the past year, we have upheld this principle and maintained peace and order, even amidst moments of political tension.
This includes facing—and overcoming—the challenge of a motion of no confidence, which tested our resolve but did not shake our commitment to serve.
As we prepare to face another motion of no confidence next week Tuesday, we approach it in the same spirit—with calm determination, guided by our unwavering duty to work for the betterment of our people.
“Before we address the upcoming motion, let me highlight some of the successes and achievements the Government for National Unity and Transformation has delivered in the past year.
“These accomplishments reflect our dedication to building a united, stable, and resilient Solomon Islands. We have promoted national dialogue, strengthened traditional governance systems, and deepened our partnerships with community and faith-based organisations to uphold peace, reconciliation, and mutual respect. This commitment to unity and inclusive development also extends to our efforts on land reform.
“The GNUT government is undertaking nationwide consultations on customary land tenure, ownership, and usage. Through the Ministry of Lands, Housing and Survey, we are actively supporting the Customary Land Recording Program, which formally documents land rights of customary land holding groups. The ongoing work in Rennell and Bellona stands as a strong example of our intent to empower local communities and ensure land benefits are shared equitably.
“Importantly, our foundation of unity and stability was further institutionalized through the launch of the National Security Strategy (NSS) 2025, which reflects our government’s long-term vision to safeguard peace and sovereignty. The NSS aligns closely with our national development priorities—particularly the second pillar of Unity and Stability—and strengthens our commitment to addressing both traditional and emerging security threats, including political.
Prime Minister Manele – the first Isabel man to hold the title – told the news conference that GNUT had come to the Office with a cleat vision to lead the country.
“GNUT is not just a collection of people – it is a group determined to serve the needs of the people of Solomon Islands. I am proud of what we’ve achieved together as a team,” Hon Manele said.
He also spoke of the no confidence motion which would be debated in Parliament next Tuesday 6th of May.
“The departure of some of our MPs to the other side, does not dissolve the government. Its door remains open.
