Following commencement of works in late 2025, initial underground drainage improvements are now well advanced between the Town Ground and Point Cruz Hot Bread roundabouts with current activity concentrated at the Heritage Park Roundabout.
Works at the roundabout include drainage improvements and kerbstone construction, aimed at strengthening the foundation and improving traffic flow and safety ahead of major surfacing works.
These early-stage activities are critical to ensuring the long-term durability and performance of the upgraded road infrastructure.
The concrete road surfacing at the Heritage Park Roundabout, together with asphalt resurfacing of the road along the Mendana Avenue corridor (including other general roadside improvements), are targeted to follow once underground drainage and utility service works have been completed with general construction progress being subject to weather conditions.
To minimise disruptions and safeguard essential services, the Contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), is working closely with Solomon Water, Solomon Telekom, and Solomon Power to ensure all utilities within the project area are properly coordinated, integrated, and protected throughout the construction period.

The overall upgrade spans approximately 1.7 kilometres, extending from Town Ground to the Honiara City Council (HCC) Roundabout, and will significantly improve road safety, drainage, and driving conditions along this key urban corridor, including one of Honiara’s busiest intersections.
Commenting on the works, the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID), Mike Qaqara, said: “The Heritage Park Roundabout is a critical traffic node in Honiara. Upgrading this intersection, alongside drainage and road improvements, will enhance safety, reduce congestion, and deliver long-term benefits for road users and the city.”
Members of the public (drivers & pedestrians) are kindly advised to exercise caution around construction areas, follow all traffic signs and traffic management instructions, and be mindful of workers on site. Due to limited opportunity for alternative routes, traffic congestion will be unavoidable but traffic management will be in place to mitigate such impacts as far as it is practicable to do so.
The continued patience and understanding of the general public, during the time improvements are being carried, will be greatly appreciated.
The project is being implemented under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), jointly funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Solomon Islands Government (SIG).
