POLICE in Auki have issued a strong warning to communities and youths following reports that methamphetamine and other illicit drugs are circulating within the town and surrounding areas.
Auki Police Sergeant Robert Alegao confirmed that information received by police indicates the presence of the highly addictive drug, commonly known as meth, in the region.
He said the situation is especially concerning in light of the Christmas and New Year period and more people are visiting the province from Honiara.
“This is a busy period when many people return home for the holidays,” Sgt Alegao told the Solomon Star.
“We believe there is a high risk that these drugs could be brought down from Honiara and spread into local communities.”
Methamphetamine is an illegal and dangerous stimulant that strongly affects the human brain and nervous system.
Health experts warn that its use can lead to long-term physical and mental harm, including addiction, aggressive behavior, and serious health complications.
Police said, the reported circulation of meth in Auki has raised serious concerns about communities safety, particularly for youths who may be targeted or pressured to experiment with drugs during social gatherings and festive events.
Sgt Alegao urged parents, guardians, church leaders, and community elders to remain alert and to speak openly with young people about the dangers of drugs.
“This drug is not safe,” he said. “It destroys lives, families, and communities.”
Police are encouraging members of the public to be vigilant and to report any suspected drug-related activities immediately.
Information provided by the community, police say, is critical in preventing the further spread of illegal drugs.
The presence of meth in Auki has sparked fears that the issue could grow into a wider national problem if not addressed quickly.
Authorities stress that collective responsibility and early reporting are key to protecting communities during the festive season and beyond.
