A team from the Ministry of Infrastructure and Development (MID) in Honiara arrived in Auki on Wednesday to carry out a thorough assessment of the damaged Fiu Bridge in Central Kwara’ae, Malaita province.
The assessment follows an incident on Monday, when a heavily loaded dump truck carrying gravel—owned by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC)—crossed the old bridge and caused significant damage.
The Fiu Bridge, a bailey-type structure, serves as a vital link connecting the northern and eastern regions of the province to Auki. Its damage has severely disrupted transportation, affecting commuters, residents, farmers, and business operators who rely on this crucial route.
Led by Chief Civil Engineer Lawrence Wawane, the MID team visited the site to evaluate the extent of the damage. Their findings will contribute to an official report and inform decisions on repair or potential reconstruction.
In response to the disruption, MID is working closely with CCECC to address the issue urgently. A temporary wet crossing was constructed and has been in use since Tuesday to provide an alternative route across the river. However, this detour is only suitable for large pickup trucks, restricting access for smaller vehicles and creating further challenges for travelers.
The ministry has apologized to the public for the inconvenience, particularly to those who depend on the North and East Malaita roads.
“We ask for your patience and understanding as our ground team works around the clock to restore this vital route,” a statement from MID said.
Despite the emergency measures, experts have warned that the Fiu Bridge may remain closed indefinitely due to the severity of the damage.
