The Solomon Islands Government (SIG) is closely monitoring the escalating tensions in the Middle East with grave concern.
The conflict intensified following reports that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, a senior Iranian cleric and former Supreme Leader of Iran, was killed along with other high-ranking officials after airstrikes allegedly carried out by Israel and the United States.
In retaliation, Iran has reportedly launched attacks targeting Israel and United States military bases across the Middle East.
Speaking during a press conference on Sunday, Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade has issued a formal travel advisory for Solomon Islands citizens.
“All Solomon Islands nationals are strongly advised not to travel to the Middle East until further notice,” Mr Manele said.
“For our citizens currently residing in the Gulf region and Israel, I urge you to take all necessary precautions, remain calm, and strictly follow the instructions of your host country authorities.”
The Prime Minister also warned the conflict could also have economic implications for the country in relation to rising fuel prices.
The Central Bank of Solomon Islands (CBSI) is also monitoring the situation.
In a statement over the weekend CBSI said, any prolonged war will have an impact on the country’s economy.
