Minister of Finance and Treasury and Member of Parliament for Fataleka Hon. Rexon Ramofafia, has announced that the Fataleka Constituency Fishery Centre in Malaita province is nearing completion, following his site visits last month.
During his tour of the constituency, Minister Ramofafia inspected the construction site and expressed his satisfaction with the significant progress being made. He confirmed that the facility is now about 95% complete stage.
“I am pleased to report that the Fataleka Fishery Centre is on track to be officially opened in June,” Minister Ramofafia said.
He said this project is a key part of his commitment to promote sustainable economic growth and create livelihoods in our communities.
“Once operational, this facility will serve as a center for local fishermen in the constituency, providing essential storage, processing, and marketing facilities for their catch. This will help reduce post-harvest losses and increase household incomes,” he said.

The Fishery Centre represents a major infrastructure investment aimed at unlocking the economic potential of Fataleka’s coastal communities.
In a move to immediately boost local fishing activities, Minister Ramofafia also oversaw the official handover of critical marine assets during his visit. The distribution included:
- 10 Outboard Motors (OBMs) and accompanying fiberglass boats, which will enable fishermen to access deeper fishing grounds more safely and efficiently.
- 30 Paddle canoes and providing entry level opportunities for community members engaged in inshore fishing.
“The handover of these OBMs and canoes is a tangible step towards empowering our people,” the Minister added.
“By providing these resources, we are not just giving out equipment; we are investing in the capacity of our people to improve their livelihoods. It complements the infrastructure of the new fishery centre and ensures that our fishermen have the tools they need to succeed.”
Minister Ramofafia reiterated his commitment to the development of the Fataleka Constituency, emphasizing that the combination of modern infrastructure and direct asset distribution is central to his vision for a prosperous, self-reliant community.
The official opening ceremony for the Fataleka Constituency Fishery Centre is scheduled for June 2026, with further details regarding the date and official guests to be announced in the coming weeks.
