Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Solomon Islands has welcomed six new volunteers that will serve Solomon Islands in the coming years.
The group arrived on Wednesday 16th April 2025.
Following their arrival they will undertake various briefings such as Pijin language training, site visits around Honiara and cultural lessons through village stay program before they will dispatch to their respective organisations.
In Honiara, Ms. Yoshie will be assigned to the Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) department at the Ministry of Health while Ms. Rie will be assigned as a midwife at Naha Clinic.
Mr. Takeshi will work as a physical therapist at the National Referral Hospital (NRH), and Ms. Yuna will be a primary school teacher at Bishop Epalle Catholic School.
For provinces Ms. Konoka will work at the NCD department at Kirakira Hospital in Makira-Ulawa Province, while Ms. Saeri will work as a sports facilitator at the Noro Town Council in Western Province.
Mr. Takeshi shared his initial impressions of Solomon Islands and expectations: The Solomon Islanders are kind, friendly, and have welcomed us warmly.
“I would like to utilize my experience as a physical therapist in stroke rehabilitation, cancer rehabilitation, and orthopedics to contribute to the advancement of medical care.”
Ms. Yuna outlined her expectations at Bishop Epalle: “Although there are many highly motivated teachers, I have heard that there are also challenges in supporting students improve their academic knowledge.
“I would like to utilize my experience to incorporate ideas that will inspire students to engage in their studies.”
The total number of JOCVs in the country has reached twenty-four. These volunteers normally spend two years during their assignment.
