The government is working on a policy to ban the import of plastic bags.
Minister for Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Disaster Management and Meteorology Services, Samuel Manetoali revealed this.
He was speaking at World Environment Day celebration in Honiara last Wednesday.
Manetoali said plastic bags are a threat to our environment.
“My ministry is therefore working on ways to stop the import of plastic bags,” the minister said.
“Maybe we can use paper bags instead of plastic bags.
“Plastics are detrimental to our marine.
“As soon as we finish working on this, we should start using paper bags.”
Manetoali appealed to the public to stop throwing plastic bags carelessly into the environment.
“Be responsible people who care for our ocean and land.
“If you are travelling in the sea and using plastic bags please remember to throw or put them at the right place and not just throw them away into the sea.
“Those plastic can kill our marine lives,” he said.
