In his first press conference on Monday Prime Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele says that labour mobility is a temporary solution.
In the long term, he stressed, the country must invest in its productive sectors.
That’s why the government has been focusing on agriculture, tourism, fisheries, and mining — sectors that can create jobs domestically.
While this approach is not easy, he said progress will come over time.
The Prime Minister noted that developing these industries will not happen overnight. Some initiatives take time to bear fruit.
For example, planting two hectares of cocoa can take between 12 and 18 months before results are seen.
He added that, realistically, these challenges will continue, and the country must acknowledge existing processes and limitations, including funding and financing constraints, as well as the need to maintain current infrastructure.
