THE Malaita Provincial Council of Women (MPCW) has elected a new executive to lead the council for the next four years.
The new executive was elected during the MPCW’s 4th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held in Auki this week.
The new executive members are:
- President Rebecca Awa;
- Vice President Jennifer Ome;
- Secretary Mary Lulu; and
- Treasurer Linda Maukera.
The ordinary executive members include Rose Liata, Fay Saemala and Christian Wale, all of whom are newcomers to the council.
In an interview with Solomon Star, President Awa expressed confidence in her executive team, emphasizing their readiness to continue the work done by the outgoing executive.
“The responsibility that we carry requires significant commitment to implement our plans effectively,” she added.
Mrs Awa highlighted the importance of collaboration by all leaders within the council with all stakeholders at the community, provincial levels and national government levels and also at the development partner level.
She said she aims to ensure that the changes outlined in the council’s strategic plan positively impact the lives of women in Malaita.
Mrs Awa stressed the necessity of working closely with women in rural areas through the Ward Council of Women network.
“The Malaita Provincial Council of Women has already established 19 Ward Councils and will continue to work on establishing the remaining 17,” she said.
Mrs Awa called on men to support women’s organizations, including MPCW, in addressing gender-based violence in the province and nation.
“Addressing gender-based violence is not solely the responsibility of women’s organizations. It requires collaboration from both provincial and national governments, as well as male champions,” she said.
Mrs Awa has heavily engaged in community development more than a decade, having worked with Save the Children for 11 years and Oxfam for five years.
