Police Traffic Officers in Honiara have arrested and charged nine drivers with the presence of alcohol above the prescribed amount in their blood during the weekend.
“Out of the total of nine drivers, seven of the drivers were arrested during the police traffic operation conducted in Honiara from 14 – 15 and the two others were arrested following separate accidents. All nine drivers have been released on principle bail awaiting a date for the hearing of their charges in court,” Kukum Traffic Centre Director, Inspector Brian Surimalefo said.
“I want to remind drivers that police will continue to conduct these operations to ensure that our roads are safe for all road users including pedestrians.
“We want to further remind the general public if you are planning to drink, please do not drive or if you are planning to drive please do not drink,” Inspector Surimalefo said.
He added: “Police also warn members of the public that action will be taken against drivers who continue to create an extra lane on some roads in the capital occupying footpaths that should be left for pedestrians.
“We understand the issue of traffic congestion in our city but we need to be patient as the responsible authorities continue to address the situation in our capital city,” Police Traffic Director, Inspector Surimalefo said.
