MEHRD announces commencement date for 2024 academic year, warns schools against the alteration of the approved date
THE Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development (MEHRD) has strongly reminded school leaders and education providers that they must abide by the date it has set for the commencement of the 2024 academic year.
The 2024 Academic Year commencement date as set by the MEHRD Permanent Secretary Dr Franco Rodie in fulfilment of the powers granted to him under the new Education Act 2023 is Monday 15 January, MEHRD announced in a statement yesterday.
“The setting of this date by the MEHRD Permanent Secretary fulfils the requirements as specified under Section 60 (1)(a) of the new Education Act 2023 which states that the Permanent Secretary must determine the terms, days and hours for the provision of education at schools, including Early Childhood Centers.
“This means no Education Authority shall alter the dates of school terms without prior approval by the Permanent Secretary.
“Before any school can announce its starting date other than the date declared by the Ministry, prior permission must be obtained from the Permanent Secretary.
“The ministry is aware that some schools have set the commencement date of their 2024 academic year on Monday 22 January 2024. This date is contrary to the date set by MEHRD which is15 January.”
The statement added that the 2024 Academic Year registration begins on Monday 8 and shall conclude on Friday 12 January.
It advised that School Principals, Head Teachers and ECE Supervisors should be at their respective schools to administer these student registrations and support students settle into school.
