OELYN Muala is the only female candidate to have won a seat in the Western Provincial Assembly elections held on Wednesday.
She is the new provincial member for Ward 6 on Rannogga Island.
Mrs Muala is the wife of South Choiseul MP Elijah Doro Muala.
“I am looking forward to serving and working closely with the people of Ward 6,” Mrs Muala told the Solomon Star yesterday.
“Not only that, but to carry out the plans that I have for my people,” she added.
Mrs Muala said she was excited about her win because she already got development plans in place for her Ward.
“These are plans that I’ve devised not just yesterday or today, but years back,” she said.
Mrs Muala’s victory came whilst more than 50 incumbent, intending, and aspiring women candidates eyeing for a seat in next year’s national general election are undergoing a week-long Practise Parliament session in Honiara.
Those attending the session expressed joy at Mrs Muala’s win.
One of the participants, Varina Leke, who is also vying for next year’s national general election, said the result is good news for intending women candidates.
Mrs Leke said she is also from Rannogga’s Ward 6 and this is the first time a female member is voted to represent them at the provincial level.
