MEMBERS of the public in Auki, Malaita Province are being warned to stay away from the deteriorating old Auki wharf, which has become a serious safety hazard.
The structure, which has long been neglected is in a severe state of disrepair.
Steel rods are now exposed from its surface, creating a dangerous environment for anyone walking or playing on the wharf.
A security officer stationed at the site told the Solomon Star that the old wharf is unsafe and should be avoided.
“The danger is real. Someone could easily fall and be injured by the exposed iron rods,” he said.
He noted that children are often seen playing on the old wharf during the evenings, unaware of the risks.
In addition, some boat owners continue to use the facility to dock their boats, despite its unsafe condition.
Malaita Province Premier, Hon. Elijah Asilaua, addressed the issue during his 2025/2026 original budget speech, announcing plans by the Malaita Provincial Government to replace the old, decommissioned wharf with a new, modern facility.
The proposed development is part of the province’s broader master plan to improve transportation infrastructure, including sea, land, and communication networks.
Premier Asilaua said, consultations are currently ongoing with relevant stakeholders—including local landowners, the Solomon Islands Ports Authority, and the national government—regarding the demolition of the old wharf and the construction of the new one.
