One young man is died while four others survive after allegedly consuming a balloon fish at Lale Village on Rannoggah in Western Province.
Balloon fish is said to be poisonous and harmful to the body.
The group was rushed to Gizo Hospital on Monday morning after feeling ill hours after eating the fish.
One of the survivors is currently admitted at the Gizo Emergency Wardl for medical treatment.
Linda Karena, the wife of one of the survivors said, her husband and another young man went out night diving along the reef just outside the village.
She told Solomon Star in an interview that the two men left the village around 10pm to dive for fish and returned at about 11pm after catching what was believed to be a balloon fish.
Upon their return they cooked the fish in coconut cream.
“After we ate the fish, several hours later we began to feel uncomfortable,” Mrs Karena said.
She added that at around 3am one of the young men who had gone diving suddenly lost his life.
The group was initially rushed to Lale Clinic but were later referred to Gizo Hospital on Monday morning for further medical treatment.
The deceased was left at the village and will be buried later.
Meanwhile, the father of one of the survivors, Francis Satini, has called on communities to be more cautious about the types of fish they consume.
“Its high time for people to be aware of what type of fish they eat because some fish are poisonous and can be dangerous to human lives,” Mr Satini said.
Similar incident also occurred in the past at Kolombangara.
