The recent defection of ten Members of Parliament (MPs), led by former Prime Minister and Party founder, Hon. Manasseh Sogavare, to the opposition political group is very disappointing for the Ownership, Unity, and Responsibility (OUR) Party.
In a statement issued on Friday, 2nd May, it expresses deep disappointment over the move which is considered a serious breach of the Government for National Unity and Transformation (GNUT) coalition agreement.
Not only that but it undermines the collective mandate entrusted by the people of Solomon Islands, the statement said.
OUR Party said, it remains a registered political entity under the Political Parties Integrity Act and is collectively owned by its registered members.
At the recent Annual Convention, a new Executive Committee was duly appointed to oversee the Party’s functions in accordance with the law and the Party Constitution.
The decision by the ten MPs to defect represents a clear violation of the GNUT coalition agreement—a pact designed to promote stable, inclusive, and transformative leadership for the country.
“OUR Party reaffirms its full commitment to this agreement and views the defections as a threat to the unity and progress envisioned under the GNUT leadership.
“In line with the Party’s internal processes, the Executive has issued Show Cause letters to the ten MPs, requesting written responses by close of business on May 2, 2025.
“This process gives each MP the opportunity to clarify their position—either by reaffirming their allegiance to OUR Party under the leadership of Hon. Party Wing Leader Jeremiah Manele, or by formally resigning and affiliating with another political party,” the statement said
The statement added, while the Party regrets the actions of the ten MPs, it respects their democratic right to associate with any political party of their choosing.
“OUR Party remains open to reconciliation, should any of the MPs decide to return to and uphold the values and vision of the Party.”
OUR Party extends its sincere appreciation to the fifteen Members of Parliament who continue to demonstrate loyalty to the Party and to the leadership of Prime Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele.
“Their continued support reflects political maturity and a strong commitment to national unity. The Party also acknowledges the unwavering support of its coalition partners—the People First Party and the Kadere Party—for their solidarity within the GNUT coalition.”
In the spirit of unity and shared national responsibility, OUR Party welcomes like-minded leaders from across the political spectrum to join any of the three GNUT coalition parties.
“Working together, we can deliver sustainable development, uphold good governance, and honour the trust placed in us by the people of Solomon Islands,” OUR Party said.
