PACIFIC Ministers have hailed the Chairs of the Pacific Water and Wastewater Ministers (PWMM) Forum as champions of the Pacific Water Security Warriors Mechanism, underscoring the region’s commitment to safeguarding water resources and nurturing the next generation of water leaders.
The recognition was included in the Communiqué issued at the conclusion of the 9th Pacific Water and Wastewater Ministerial (PWWM) Forum, held in Honiara from 25–26 August 2025. Ministers also supported efforts to amplify Pacific voices on water security in regional and global forums, including the Pacific Islands Forum and the United Nations.
Ministers tasked the Pacific Community (SPC), in collaboration with the Pacific Water and Wastewater Association (PWWA) and the PRP Water Security Technical Working Group, to develop a program to build a new generation of Pacific Water Security Warriors, including resource mobilization. Progress on this initiative will be reported at the 10th PWMM Forum.
The forum also reviewed the draft Terms of Reference for the PWMM Forum (2026–2030), which will guide governance, operations, and responsibilities. Ministers agreed to finalize these through consultation and endorsement by Senior Officials, with operational details such as meeting frequency and terminology to be discussed at the next forum.
Updates on financing were highlighted, including regional and bilateral assistance, sector-based financing instruments, and climate and disaster financing mechanisms.
Ministers stressed the need for sustainable financing from sources such as the Green Climate Fund, World Bank, Asian Development Bank, and other partners, while maintaining affordability and infrastructure upkeep.
The establishment of the Pacific Water Academy in Fiji was welcomed as a key initiative to strengthen the capacity of water and wastewater operators.
The Academy will support structured training programs and initiatives such as the Pacific Young Water Professionals Program, aimed at building expertise, technical capacity, and knowledge-sharing across the Pacific. Ministers recognized the crucial role of young professionals in shaping the future of water management.
The 10th PWWM Forum is scheduled to be held in Tahiti in 2026.
