Parliament has officially gone on a special adjournment following a motion moved by Prime Minister (PM) Jeremiah Manele, in the House on Tuesday 27 May 2025.
The motion, which was passed without objection, reads:
“That at its adjournment on Tuesday 27 May 2025, Parliament shall adjourn to Monday 14 July 2025.”
In his statement to Parliament, PM Manele outlined several key reasons for this special adjournment:
1. Legislative Committee Work
The adjournment is to allow the Bills and Legislation Committee (BLC) sufficient time to conduct inquiries into two important Bills – the National Building Standards Bill and the Mineral Resources Bill. During this period, the government also intends to finalize and table other critical pieces of legislation, including the Supplementary Appropriation Bill.
2. International Commitments of the Prime Minister
The Prime Minister informed the House that he will be attending several high-level international engagements during this period in his capacity as Head of Government. These include:
o The Blue Economy and Finance Forum in Monaco
o The Third United Nations Conference to be held in Nice, France
o The OPEC Fund for International Development Forum in Vienna, Austria, where he has been invited as a keynote speaker, with the forum focusing on global transitions and sustainable development.
3. Provincial Second Appointed Days
The month of June also marks the Second Appointed Day celebrations for several provinces, including Isabel, Temotu, and Central Provinces. The Prime Minister noted that he has received invitations to attend some of these events. However, if he is unable to attend due to his international commitments, he has confirmed that the Deputy Prime Minister or the Minister for Provincial Government and Institutional Strengthening will represent the government at those events.
4. Constituency Visits by MPs
The special adjournment also provides an opportunity for all Members of Parliament (MP) to return to their respective constituencies to engage with their people and attend to local matters of importance.
All Members who contributed to the motion voiced their support, while also sharing their thoughts on national matters and reminding the government of its responsibilities during this term.
Members extended their best wishes to the PM and his delegation for their upcoming travels, wishing them safe and productive engagements abroad.
Parliament will resume again on Monday 14th July 2025.
