Prime Minister (PM) Jeremiah Manele, MP, has hailed the Solomon Islands National Women’s Football Team for their historic victory at the OFC Women’s Nations Cup, calling it a “defining moment” in the country’s history.
Speaking at a national celebration event held in Honiara, Prime Minister Manele praised the team for breaking a 42-year drought since the inception of the tournament in 1983, by clinching the nation’s first-ever OFC Women’s Nations Cup title.
“Your victory is not only a win on the football pitch — it is a win for every Solomon Islander,” the Prime Minister said. “This is not just about lifting a trophy; it is about lifting an entire nation.”
The Prime Minister acknowledged the national and international significance of the team’s achievement, noting that their win has placed Solomon Islands firmly on the global sporting map and set a powerful example of unity, pride, and determination.
“You have set a standard for others to follow. Our Men’s National Team and every athlete must draw inspiration from your journey,” he added.
PM Manele emphasised that the triumph also reflects broader themes of national development, equity, and the empowerment of women. He reaffirmed the Government for National Unity and Transformation’s (GNUT) commitment to investing in sports, particularly women and youth participation.
“You are living proof of what happens when women are given a platform to succeed,” he said, calling for continued development of sporting infrastructure and inclusive policies.
The Prime Minister extended heartfelt thanks to the 23 players, their coach, technical staff, the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF), the National Sports Council, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and all families and supporters who contributed to the victory.
“You are more than athletes. You are leaders, ambassadors, and nation builders,” PM Manele said.
He concluded by encouraging young girls and women across the country to see the victory as a sign of limitless possibilities, in all walks of life — from sport and education to leadership and science.
“Let this not be the end of a journey, but the beginning of a new era,” the Prime Minister stated.
This week, the members of the Women’s National Team were honoured at a dinner, where each received a token of appreciation.
