Police in Kirakira continue with Safe boat Operation
Police at Kirakira in the Makira Ulawa Province have advised the captain of vessel MV Awaka on 19 January 2018 during a safe boat operation to ensure the ship is safe before travel as it appeared the boat was overloaded with passengers.
Provincial Police Commander (PPC) Superintendent Peter Sitai says, “My officers at Kirakira have checked the vessel, M.V Awaka and the number of passengers who intended to travel on-board was between 300-400 people.”
PPC Sitai adds, “My officers learned from the captain of the vessel the capacity for passengers is less than 200 and yet the people forced their way into the ship, even after being told it cannot take any more people.”
He said, “People with no tickets were asked to get off the boat before it may leave for Honiara.”
“I appeal to the travelling public and ship owners to cooperate when police carry out its duty as this is important for the safety of the people and the ship itself in times of bad weather,” says Superintendent Sitai.
Communities welcome police initiative to curb illegal activities in Makira Ulawa Province
A team of police officers from Kirakira Station, in Makira Ulawa Province successfully completed a week’s tour of Ugi Island as part of the Crime Prevention Strategy; from 12 -16 January 2018.
Provincial Police Commander Superintendent Peter Sitai says, “Following the arrest of two female teenagers over the festive season at Umara village led to the need for police to do more awareness talks.”
PPC Sitai adds, “The aim of the awareness is to educate people about the Family Protection Act implementation and also to get the support of community members on Ugi Island to try to curb illegal activities such as home-made alcohol, the growing, use and sale of the dangerous drug marijuana.”
He says, “The brewing and sale of home-made alcohol without a license authorised by the Minister responsible is against the law and so is growing, use, possession and sale of marijuana.”
The police team visited Makia, Hunuta, Mwanipua, Tawarodo and Marou Villages during the tour of on Ugi Island.
“I am pleased with the outcome of the tour of Ugi and thank you the members of the community for their support in making the tour a success,” says PPC Sitai.
Superintendent Sitai adds, “I appeals to other communities in Makira Ulawa province to do the same and work closely with the police to ensure these illegal activities do not happen in our communities.”
Police confirm missing person found
Police at the Henderson Police Station in Guadalcanal Province confirms the person reported missing from the Tenaru area in Central Guadalcanal since Sunday 14 January 2018 has been found and well.
It was alleged that the man went missing between 2 and 3 am in the early morning of 14 January after watching video at a neighbour’s house in the Tenaru area in Central Guadalcanal.
The relatives conducted a search on the night and later reported the matter to the police the next day.
Acting Provincial Police Commander (PPC), Guadalcanal Province, Superintendent Nixson Manetoga says, “My officers and relatives of the man have been searching for the missing person since it was reported to us.”
“I can confirm that the man has now been found and is safe,” says PPC Manetoga.
It is alleged the man disappeared following fears for his safety.
Superintendent Manetoga says, “My officers are investigating the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the man.”
Mr Manetoga says, “I appeal to people in the Tenaru area in Central Guadalcanal to assist my investigation team with information about the alleged threat on the man.”
He adds, “I would also like to clarify the alleged body parts found in the Tenaru area as reported in the media cannot be confirmed as that of a human being. We cannot confirm the reports and so I would like to appeal to members of the communities in the Tenaru area not to fear and to feel free to move around. I appeal to you all to report any thing that is unusual in your area to the Henderson Police Station.”
