POLICE investigation into the Economic Stimulus Package (ESP) is underway with several statements being taken to lead the investigation.
Police Commissioner Mostyn Mangau revealed that they have received the referrals of the ESP audit report from the Auditor General and are now inviting people for examination and question.
He made this disclosure when asked by a journalist about an update on the ESP during a special conference on Friday.
“Several statements have been taken, and people have been invited for examination and questioning,” Mr Mangau said.
When asked if those invited are the ones in connection to the ESP, Mr Mangau clarified that those people who have been questioned are only being questioned to lead the investigation.
“At the moment, no one has been charged yet; we invite people only for questioning to lead the investigation,” he said.
“Hopefully we should have some updates anytime next month.”
The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force and the Auditor General signed a Memorandum of Understanding in May 2023to enhance cooperation on matters requiring investigation.
The MOU includes the referrals for issues relating to potential corruption and misconduct.
The agreement sets out areas of cooperation, including referrals procedures, follow ups, sharing of information and sharing of resources between the Auditor-General and RSIPF.
The MoU formalises a process for the OAG to refer to the RSIPF any matters found in audits and other work which may indicate corruption, crime or misconduct.
It also provides for the OAG to pass on any information it has regarding those matters that may assist the RSIPF in any investigation of interest to them.
This process includes measures to ensure confidentiality and a clear trail of information being passed to the RSIPF.
