Members of the general public of Honiara City are demanding the road repair contractors to reveal their qualifications to carry out road works, and also contractors must explain to the people why their pot holes’ patching job cannot even last for a month.
Speaking to this paper, Alfred Leka a commuter who always travels by public transport to work daily said, that contractors who fail to perform well must stop biding for contract jobs at the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID).
Mr Leka also stated that MID must exercise its role by getting tough on false contractors who claimed to be specialised in road maintenance work, but were proven worthless as reflected in their job.
He further stated that pot holes patching becomes an eyesore job in certain highways along Honiara City, since same place on the road were patched over and over again, without any sense of realisation.
Flooding comments from social media highlights that the problem remains unsolved and it seem that the same contractors continues to be given the awards by the relevant authorities to do the job.
One social media commentator suggested that the government must serious with its tendering process, in order to get the right contractor who will deliver quality job.
“Lack of engineering knowledge as well in the tender board also contributed to selections of underperforming contractors, considering the important process of evaluating capacity of companies,” he said.
