Honiara City Council (HCC) through its Waste Management and Control Division has commenced its operations to remove vehicle wreckage that are littering the roadside.
The operation starts this afternoon, Tuesday 9th September at Skyline Area, Central Honiara.
In a statement, the Waste Management and Control Division said, the HCC team is at the Skyline area to remove some of the major litter.
“Car wreckage derelicts removal. Please remove any car wreckage along the road side. It is considered Major litter.”
The operation is being carried out with the support of the HCC Law Enforcement officers.
A resident in the area told Solomon Star, “HCC officers are removing old and break-down vehicles along Skyline road this afternoon.”
The operation came after months of warning being issued to the owners of the wrecked vehicles.
In March this year Honiara City Council has carried out inspections and issued notices to owners and mechanics responsible for derelict vehicles along Koa Hill, Skyline, and Mbokonavera (1, 2, 3, 4, and 5) roads.
Authorized officers from the Law Enforcement, Waste Management Control, and Physical Planning Divisions have visited the identified locations and consulted with the community, offering accurate advice, and addressing concerns related to derelict vehicles.
The aim is to encourage owners and mechanics to take responsibility and promptly resolve the issue.
City Clerk Justus Denni in March highlighted that all residents, vehicle owners, and mechanics must collaborate with HCC in this initiative.
In August another warning was also issued.
Given the failure by vehicle owners to comply, HCC has now moved in to remove the old and unused vehicles.
