THE Malaita Provincial Government (MPG) plans to replace the old, decommissioned wharf in Auki with a new, modern facility.
Malaita Premier Elijah Asilaua announced the plan during the opening of the 2025/2026 original budget meeting this week.
Mr. Asilaua said consultations are currently underway with resource owners, the Solomon Islands Ports Authority, and the national government regarding the demolition of the old wharf and construction of the new one.
“This new development is aimed at creating a better and safer Auki, with expanded maritime infrastructure to provide secure shipping services to Malaita.
“The new wharf will ensure safer access for ships entering the domestic port, which connects our sub-regions,” he said.
In addition, he said consultations have been held with the relevant parties involved with the old wharf’s defunct boat berthing.
He said these boats will be towed for repairs at a safe dock, minimizing the risk of maritime contamination and other environmental hazards.
