Gizo Hospital in Western Province has recorded an alarming increase cases of food poisoning.
It was alleged several patients fell ill after consuming fish and chips bought from the Gizo main market.
Medical staff confirmed that the affected individuals reported symptoms such as severe stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea after eating the popular market dish.
While no fatalities have been reported, health authorities are urging vendors to take extra precautions when handling and selling fish.
A senior nurse at Gizo Hospital advised that food poisoning is often caused by spoiled or contaminated seafood.
“We strongly urge vendors to properly store and inspect their fish before selling them.
“Consumers should also be cautious and ensure that the food they purchase is fresh and properly cooked,” the Senior Nurse told Solomon Star in an interview on Friday.
Market vendors play a crucial role in maintaining food safety standards, and authorities have reminded them to follow proper storage practices to prevent health risks.
“Please, our good market vendors, make sure to check and store your fish properly before selling to customers,” a concerned resident urged.
Concern leaders and residents have urged health officials and other responsible authorities to work closely with local market authorities to ensure food safety measures are enforced.
Consumers are also advised to be mindful when purchasing cooked food from the market and to report any suspected cases of food-borne illness to health authorities.
More investigations are expected to determine the exact cause of contamination, and officials may consider stricter regulations to prevent further incidents.
