Road and drainage improvement work from the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) to the Honiara City Council (HCC) pedestrian crossing Lot 1A resumed early this week.
Local contractor Ultimate Enterprise is carrying out these improvements section by section, focusing on concrete pouring and curb installation.
So far, they have completed concreting on the land side and sea side from the MID Headquarter gates.
This week, they focus on the seaside section towards the pedestrian crossing.
Work is performed first by ripping the old sealed surface, insert casing and steel and then pouring of concrete, creating a stronger, more durable road surface capable of withstanding heavy rain, water accumulation, and the increased load-bearing capacity of heavy traffic.
Ultimate crew occasionally pauses their work allowing the concrete to undergo the curing process which can take up to a minimum of a week or 28 days.
This process is necessary to achieve the desired properties, such as maximum strength, quality, and resistance to environmental factors.
MID’s laboratory team is always on-site during the concrete pouring phases to ensure quality assurance and control.
This project is funded through the National Transport Fund, supported by the Australian Government under the Transport Emergency Maintenance Program.
