The annual Roviana Lagoon Festival in Munda, Western Province, has ended on a successful note, attracting a large crowd of local residents and visitors.
They were able to witness and participate in a range of cultural games and activities.
Lagoon Festival Chairlady, Ms Jenno Entrikin-Hughes, described the event as a major success, commending the strong support and commitment shown by the community throughout the festival.
“With a big turnout from our own people and those who travelled from afar to witness the games, my team managed to bring the festival to life and sustain it right through to the final day,” she said.
Ms Entrikin-Hughes extended special appreciation to volunteers and members of the organising committee for their tireless efforts in ensuring the smooth running of the event.
She highlighted that the Roviana Lagoon Festival plays a crucial role in reviving and preserving Roviana culture, while ensuring traditional practices and values are passed on to younger generations.
“This festival is important in reminding our young people of who we are and the need to protect our culture so that we do not lose our identity,” she told the crowd during the closing programme at Lambete Station.
Beyond cultural preservation, Ms Entrikin-Hughes said the festival also serves as an important platform for promoting tourism in the Roviana Lagoon area.
“By showcasing our culture to the outside world, we attract visitors, which in turn helps support our local economy,” she said.
She thanked all competitors, sponsors and spectators for their support, noting that the festival belongs to the community, neighbouring villages and visiting friends alike.
The Roviana Lagoon Festival, which began last Tuesday, was officially opened at Lambete by the Member of Parliament (MP) for West Georgia and Vona Vona Lagoon Constituency Hon. George Temahua.
The annual event is expected to continue playing a key role in strengthening cultural pride while promoting tourism and economic opportunities in Western Province
