Efforts to salvage the stranded vessel MV Vatate have so far proven unsuccessful, with the ship still grounded at Zaru reef, Northwest Choiseul after running aground nearly three months ago.
The vessel was grounded on earlier this year after experiencing mechanical problems while navigating waters near Zaru reef.
Since then, the first major salvage operation, carried out last month involving two tugboats, failed to dislodge the vessel from the reef.
Despite coordinated efforts to pull the ship free during favourable tidal conditions, the operation did not succeed.
Sources confirmed that the ship remains firmly lodged, raising concerns about possible structural damage the longer it stays stranded.
Vatate Shipping highlighted that the salvage operation requires substantial resources, including tug assistance, flotation equipment, technical expertise, and logistical coordination.
The company also stated that the costs involved are beyond its current capacity, warning that delays could result in the permanent loss of the vessel and potential environmental consequences.
Following the grounding of the vessel, urgent appeal has been made to the Members of Parliament [MP] representing Choiseul province to assist in salvage operation.
However, the vessel has long served as a critical link for transporting essential goods such as fuel and building materials, while also supporting local trade and providing affordable passenger travel.
Its absence has raised concerns over the continuity of supply chains and economic activity in the province.
Meanwhile, the ship remains grounded as calls for urgent assistance continue.
