Solomon Islands local assistant referee Charles Sau has been appointed to officiate in the second round of the 2026 OFC Professional League, which gets underway this weekend in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea.
Sau, an OFC Badge official, will be part of the match officiating team for the second circuit of the league’s inaugural season, marking another significant milestone in his career.
What makes Sau’s appointment even more notable is that he is one of only two OFC Badge match officials, alongside one from New Zealand, selected among a group otherwise dominated by FIFA Badge assistant referees for this weekend’s 12 matches.
Speaking to Star Sports, Sau said he is excited about the opportunity.
“I feel very proud, humbled and happy about the appointment because this is a professional league and one of the highest stages in my career so far,” he said.
Sau will travel with the Solomon Islands FIFA Badge officiating trio of Ben Aukwai, Bernard Mutukera and Jeffery Solodia, who also officiated during the opening round held last week in Auckland, New Zealand.
“As I will be officiating alongside FIFA Badge officials in the region, the goal is to gain more experience, improve my performance and meet the required standards,” he added.
The officiating team is scheduled to depart the country on Wednesday, 28 January, for Port Moresby.
Sau’s appointment also reflects the continued growth and recognition of Solomon Islands match officials at both regional and international levels.
Offering words of encouragement to aspiring referees, Sau urged upcoming local match officials continue to work hard.
“My advice to upcoming match officials in the country is to continue working hard. One day you will also achieve your dreams like I did. Always think positively and remember God in everything.”
Following an entertaining opening round in Auckland, the second round of the OFC Pro League kicks off on 31 January and promises another intense series of 12 matches as clubs battle for crucial points in their campaigns.
