Save the Children Solomon Islands has congratulated the Government of Solomon Islands, through the Ministry of Women, Youth, Children and Family Affairs, for successfully hosting the 2025 International Children’s Day event in Honiara.
The celebration also marked the 30th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC 30), a global commitment that continues to guide and strengthen efforts to protect and uplift children across the nation.
This year’s celebration provided an important platform for children, communities, and stakeholders to reflect on the progress made toward fulfilling children’s rights and to re-emphasize collective responsibility for their wellbeing and serves as an important reminder of the continued responsibility shared across government, civil society, and communities to ensure that all children grow up safe, healthy, and empowered.
The UN CRC has brought many tangible benefits to children and the country, shaping national policies and programmes that support children in Solomon Islands.
These included areas such as strengthening child protection systems that ensure cases of violence, abuse, and exploitation are identified and responded to more effectively, and an increased focus on access to quality education for all children, leading to improved learning environments and better opportunities for children in both urban and rural areas.
Save the Children acknowledges the Ministry’s leadership in advancing these commitments and applauds its ongoing efforts to engage children meaningfully in national conversations about their rights.
The organisation also recognises the dedication of frontline workers, teachers, community volunteers, and families who contribute daily to creating safer and more supportive spaces for children to thrive.
Save the Children has worked in the Solomon Islands for more than 40 years and remains committed to advancing children’s rights through its child-centered programs and policies focused on ensuring children are safe, healthy, and able to learn.
Not only that but to empower families and communities to support children’s well-being through community-based initiatives, advocacy, emergency response, and partnerships with government and local organizations
SCA Country Director – Tory Clawson said, his favourite part of International Children’s Day was hearing directly from children themselves.
“Children are the experts on their own lives. It is important for all of us adults to create space for children to share their point of view, to listen to them carefully, and use that input to inform our work with and for children. I thank all the children who shared their point of view with us.”
As a long-standing partner in child rights and development, Save the Children Solomon Islands looks forward to continuing its collaboration with the Government and other stakeholders to build on the CRC’s legacy and ensure that every child in Solomon Islands is protected, valued, and given the opportunity to reach their full potential.
