Road improvement works within Honiara City, involving the sealing of the Mendana Avenue road section from Heritage Park Hotel to City Council, will soon commence under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP).
Given the scope and complexity of the activities, construction will be undertaken in four stages across eight sections.
Works will progress sequentially, with construction switching between the seaside and landside carriageways.
The targeted timeframe for completion is 5-6 months, starting at end of February 2026, but remains subject to favourable weather conditions.

Initial construction activities (Stage 1) will be carried out from the Heritage Park roundabout to the Solomon Islands Ports Authority (SIPA) intersection, commencing on the seaside carriageway.
Subsequent stages will continue from the SIPA intersection to the Hot Bread Kitchen roundabout (Stage 2), then from Hot Bread Kitchen roundabout to the Honiara Central Market (Stage 3), and finally from Central Market to the MID/HCC roundabout (Stage 4).
Traffic management measures will be implemented throughout the construction period. The contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), will liaise closely with nearby commercial enterprises to minimise disruptions and maintain access wherever practicable.
During construction, traffic congestion may increase beyond normal levels, and motorists are encouraged to plan their travel accordingly.
Hibiscus Avenue will remain accessible to provide alternative routing options where possible.
In the interest of public safety, drivers are urged to maintain low speeds at all times and comply with all traffic signs and directions from traffic controllers.
Pedestrians are also requested to observe safety signage, use designated crossing points within work zones, and remain clear of construction areas at all times.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure Development, Allan Lilia, said the works represent another key milestone in improving Honiara’s road infrastructure.
“The sealing of this important road section will significantly improve driving conditions, enhance safety, and contribute to a more reliable and resilient road network in central Honiara.
“While temporary traffic disruptions are unavoidable during construction, the long-term benefits to road users and the wider community will be substantial.
“We sincerely thank the public and business community for their continued patience and cooperation at this time,” Mr Lilia said.
Within Honiara, except for minor finishing works that includes installation of street lights, traffic signs, and road markings, the works through to mid-2026 will substantially complete the LMCP road improvements that extend from the main Central Business District through to the western ‘city-limits’ boundary at the White River Bridge.
The project is being implemented by the Solomon Islands Government, under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP), with assistance from the Asian Development Bank.
