China Town in Central Honiara on Monday night marked a significant milestone in its recovery and continued development with the official handover of a new police post, aimed at strengthening law and order in the capital’s busiest commercial hub.
The facility was handed over during a joint celebration of the Lantern Festival at Chung Wah School, bringing together government leaders, members of the Chinese community, business representatives and members of the public.
Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele, who officiated at the event, described the occasion as a “double celebration” — highlighting both cultural unity and enhanced security.
“As we light the lanterns to signify hope and a bright future, we also light this new police post as a beacon of security in China Town,” the Prime Minister said.
The new post was constructed through the initiative of the Solomon Islands Chinese Association (SICA) and officially handed over to the Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) to improve police visibility and response capability in the area.
China Town plays a central role in Honiara’s commercial and economic activity but has also faced serious challenges in the past, including destruction during civil unrest and damage caused by flash floods.
Prime Minister Manele acknowledged the resilience of the business community, particularly the Chinese Association, for rebuilding and modernising the area while maintaining its historic identity.
On behalf of the Government and people of Solomon Islands, he thanked the Chinese community for its long-standing contribution to the national economy, including job creation and business investment.
He also commended the Association for taking the initiative to construct the police post, describing it as a strong demonstration of partnership and shared responsibility in maintaining peace and order.
The enhanced police presence is expected to provide reassurance to businesses, residents and customers, while strengthening the operational capacity of officers serving the capital’s commercial district.
The ceremony was attended by Cabinet Ministers, Members of Parliament, the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China Cai Weiming, the Acting Commissioner of Police, business houses and members of the wider community.
The Prime Minister concluded by reaffirming the Government’s commitment to promoting unity, harmony and security throughout the country as celebrations continued into the evening.
