The Consumer Affairs and Price Control Division (CAPCD) within the Ministry of Commerce has officially issued a warning to Hanter Shop in Honiara for selling goods beyond its required price.
Reports reaching the paper said, the shop was warned for selling consumer goods at prices exceeding the maximum limits set by the nation’s Price Control Order dated March 20, 2025.
CAPCD Director Mr. Geoffrey Dan Houúa confirmed that the shop was found selling Mamei Chicken Luncheon (72x198g) for $9.00 per tin and Kino Washing Powder (20x400g) for $7.00 per packet, both above the permitted retail prices of $7.50 and $6.00, respectively.
“This is a clear case of overpricing. The Price Control Orders are in place to ensure fair and affordable pricing for all consumers in the Solomon Islands,” stated Mr. Houúa.
He emphasized, all traders must strictly adhere to the permitted price ceilings outlined in the Order.
An investigation was initiated after CAPCD officials noticed discrepancies between shelf prices and regulatory guidelines.
Upon completion, a formal warning was issued to the retailer.
While CAPCD believes Hanter Shop may have violated Section 20 of the Consumer Protection Act of 1995, the final determination will be made by the court.
Section 20 of the Consumer Protection Act states: “No trader shall sell any goods at a price above the maximum retail or wholesale price, as fixed in respect of such goods by order made under the Price Control Act.”
Violators of the Consumer Protection Act can face penalties of up to $10,000 or one year of imprisonment for a first offense, and up to two years for subsequent violations.
“If anyone has purchased goods priced above the maximum permitted retail or wholesale prices outlined in the Price Control Order 2025, please contact the CAPCD office by phone at 24616. The CAPCD is located in the Mokolo Building, China Town,” advised Mr. Houúa.
The public have been urged to report shops in Honiara that may have been selling goods over the required price.
