NICE, France, — Prime Minister Hon. Jeremiah Manele has officially deposited Solomon Islands’ instrument of ratification for the Agreement on Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) during the United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, France.
This marks Solomon Islands’ formal commitment to the protection and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in the high seas — the parts of the ocean beyond national jurisdiction.
The BBNJ Agreement is a landmark global treaty that provides a legal framework for conserving marine life and regulating human activities such as fishing, mining, and marine scientific research in international waters.
The treaty will enter into force once at least 60 countries deposit their instruments of ratification.
Prime Minister Manele said, the Solomon Islands recognises the vital role of the ocean for food security, livelihoods, and environmental health, and is committed to responsible ocean governance.
Solomon Islands urges other countries to ratify the agreement to ensure it comes into full effect.
