SOLOMON Islands Government (SIG) on Thursday officially received the upgraded Honiara International Airport from the contractor.
Dubbed as a major milestone for the country, the Honiara Runway Resurfacing and Airfield Ground Lighting Project was officially received by the Acting Prime Minister & Minister for Communication and Aviation, Hon. Fredrick Kologeto.
The project was made possible under the Solomon Islands Road and Aviation Project (SIRAP) phase two.
The event marked the successful completion of critical aviation infrastructure upgrades at Honiara International Airport, enhancing the safety, efficiency, and reliability of air travel in and out of the country.
Thursday’s program included speeches from a representative of the World Bank Naoki Kakuta Transport Specialist and Task Team Leader for SIRAP 2 and Acting Prime Minister Kolqeto.

Kakuta in his remarks said, the ceremony was very important to celebrate the official opening of the runway resurfacing and airfield ground lighting works at Honiara International Airport, completed in March 2025 under SIRAP2.
He said, these improvements, part of the World Bank-supported SIRAP2, mark a significant milestone in enhancing the efficiency, safety, and climate resilience of Honiara International Airport, the nation’s primary gateway.
“These upgrades have strengthened the airport’s infrastructure, ensuring it is better equipped to withstand climate challenges and serve as a reliable hub for passengers, tourists, and essential supplies.
“These SIRAP2 investments, including installing runway end safety areas, ensured that the airport meets the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) safety and security standards,” Kakuta said.
Acting PM in his remarks acknowledged SIRAP for the successful completion of the project.

He said, the completion of the project aligns with government’s commitment to ensure the aviation sector in Solomon Islands meets international aviation safety standards.
He added, the completion of the project will enhance traffic service to manage flights each day.
Minister Kologeto added, the upgrade will also help pilots to land even when the weather is unstable.
He expressed the success of the project was a testament of the partnership between the Solomon Islands government and donor partners.
On behalf of the Solomon Islands Government he extended government’s appreciation to the World Bank and the contractors.
Several ministers were present to witness the ceremony.
The ceremony also featured the exchange of gifts between the Solomon Islands Government and the contractors.

A celebration cake was also cut as part of the celebration.
Following a light refreshment, guided ride through the run away was undertaken in two buses.
The official ribbon cutting ceremony was held at the western end of the runaway.
The project started in early 2023 and took three years to complete.
SIRAP in a statement said, this transformative project, delivered under SIRAP2, is already making a big impact in strengthening aviation safety and connectivity across our nation.
“Big thanks to World Bank, MCA, CRCEG, EGIS, and all stakeholders for their partnership and commitment to delivering quality infrastructure for Solomon Islands,” SIRAP said in a statement.
China Railway Construction Engineering Group (CRCEG) carried out the project.
