The much-anticipated South Choiseul Constituency Championship (SCCC) 2026 has officially kicked off on Monday at Sasamuga Village, Ward 5, marking a major sporting event for the South Choiseul constituency.
The tax-payers’ funded championship, themed as; “Through sports we unite as one people of South Choiseul,” has attracted more than 300 athletes from across the constituency.
The event featured participating teams competing in three sporting categories; soccer, netball and volleyball.
The official opening ceremony was graced by the Member of Parliament(MP) for South Choiseul Hon. Tozen Leokana who facilitated the sports event, and the guest of honour, Hon. George Vanakana, Minister of Lauru Affairs for Choiseul Provincial Government.
Also present were community leaders, church representatives, sports officials and supporters from surrounding villages.
The event aims to develop young sporting talents while fostering social cohesion among villages and communities through friendly yet competitive sporting activities that promote unity, discipline and mutual respect across South Choiseul.
Delivering his keynote address, Hon. Leokana acknowledged the presence of the guest of honour and other invited guests, while thanking the organisers, community leaders and volunteers for their commitment to making the event a success.
He emphasised the importance of sports in bringing people together, and nurturing future athletes for provincial and national competitions.
“While differences can at times divide us, sport serves as a reminder that cooperation and mutual respect can overcome such barriers,” he said.
“So let us continue to use sports as a powerful tool to connect our communities and strengthen our shared vision as people of South Choiseul Constituency,” he concluded.
The event will run from 12th to 16th January.
