Malaita province sports coordinator Eddie Omokirio has promoted gender equality in sports by engaging young girls in football coach trainings.
The latest was at Garata school in Baegu, North Malaita which was attended by 30 female students from the school.
It was the first for these young girls in the area to participate in such men dominated sport, reports reaching Star Sports said.
The coaching training program was part of the Malaita provincial sports division’s commitment to develop coaching ability, for both young girls and boys.
Not only that but to promote football to girls in the province under a program of Solomon islands Football Federation (SIFF) called ‘Soka fo gele en mere” kirio program.
“I like to include girls in this particular sport for them to advocate on females’ right to participate in football sport in Malaita.
“Football is for both male and female,” Omokirio said.
Omokirio said Malaita provincial government sport division is serious and committed to advocate for female rights to play football.
He said Malaita sports division will continue to assist sports men and women to understand learn and technical area to develop football sport in the province.
“ I am here to help communities that love to introduce girls football in the Malaita province,” Omokirio said.
