Strong wind and heavy rainfall continue to batter parts of Western New Georgia, affecting Munda, Noro and surrounding lagoon areas in the Vonavona and Roviana regions in Western Province.
The adverse weather conditions have been felt across the archipelago since midweek last Wednesday.
While conditions briefly improved on Saturday and parts of Sunday, the weather deteriorated again on Monday, forcing major disruptions to travel plans.
The worsening conditions come at a critical time as students and teachers prepare to return to schools ahead of the start of the academic year next week.
“Travel plans for both students and teachers have been affected as the weather situation continues to change,” James Beti from Vona Vona Lagoon told Solomon Star this week.
“Residents have been advised to remain indoors as the situation worsens, with reports indicating the weather is linked to Tropical Cyclone Louna passing through parts of central Melanesia,” Beti said.
Authorities have also warned vehicle operators, including buses and heavy utility vehicles, to avoid using the 16-kilometre economic road stretch connecting the tuna hub of Noro to Munda International Airport.
“That section of road is vulnerable under the current weather conditions, and motorists are urged to stay away until further notice,” an official said.
Despite the poor weather, schools in the area have decided to keep their offices open to allow for registration of both new and continuing students, which will continue until Friday.
As of Monday, there have been no reports of injuries or missing persons traveling between Kolombangara, Rendova and nearby lagoon villages.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and are urging the public to stay alert and prioritize safety.
Meanwhile the Solomon Islands Meteorological Service has continued to issue Strong Wind Warnings.
Authorities warn that these conditions have the potential to impact lives and property, and the public is advised to take all necessary precautionary measures.
