The Sub-Regional Coordinator of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Mr Solomon Kantha presented his Letters of Credentials to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Hon. Peter Shanel Agovaka this week.
Mr. Kantha assumes the role with coordinating responsibilities across the Pacific region, including Cook Islands, Fiji, Niue, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tokelau, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu.
Minister Agovaka warmly received Mr. Kantha’s credentials, expressing confidence in his leadership and extensive experience in migration and development issues across the region.
“Your deep understanding of the social, political, and economic landscape of our islands is vital in further strengthening the multilateral partnership between IOM and Solomon Islands,” Minister Agovaka said.
“We welcome your commitment and look forward to enhanced collaboration on key issues.”
The Minister acknowledged IOM’s 18 projects in the country, five are currently active.
These initiatives have been supported by nine international donors, including the IOM Development Fund.
Minister Agovaka underscored the importance of addressing climate change, disaster risk management amongst other issues.
Despite ongoing challenges, the Government of Solomon Islands recognized IOM’s contribution in building local capacity and expressed optimism for the continued partnership.
In closing, Minister Agovaka congratulated Mr. Kantha on his appointment and extended best wishes to IOM Director General, Ms. Amy E. Pope.
“We welcome you warmly to Honiara and wish you a successful tenure in office,” the Minister said.
