The Royal Solomon Islands Police Force (RSIPF) has classified the death of a female found floating in the Mataniko River as ‘suspicious’.
This following the discovery of multiple injuries on her face, including bruises around her eye and lip.
The RSIPF is currently conducting an investigation to determine the exact cause of death.
The body was discovered by residents of Marble Street in Tuvaruhu, Central Honiara, who were stunned by the sight and immediately alerted the police.
Officers arrived on the scene and transported the body to the National Referral Hospital (NRH) morgue for further investigation and identification.
Patrick Ofa, a local resident, was the first to notice the body.
In an interview with the paper’s journalist at the scene, Ofa shared that he had been on his way home to charge his Bluetooth speaker when he spotted the lifeless figure in the river around 7 a.m.
“I was shocked and immediately went to alert a neighbor who was carrying her baby,” Ofa recounted.
The neighbor, along with other members of the Tuvaruhu community, promptly informed the police.
The RSIPF is urging residents, particularly those in Tuvaruhu, to come forward with any information that could assist in the investigation.
They also requested that members of the public visit the NRH morgue to help identify the deceased.
