A National Taskforce to spearhead preparations for the Solomon Islands’ 50th Independence Anniversary in 2028 has been appointed.
The Taskforce formally appointed by the National Government is mandated to plan, coordinate and oversee all activities associated with the nation’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, marking a significant milestone in the country’s history.
Speaking during the Taskforce’s inaugural meeting, the Vice Chair and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Jeffery Sade Deve, confirmed that Cabinet has endorsed the establishment of the committee.
He stated that the Taskforce will provide strategic leadership and direction for all preparatory and commemorative programmes leading up to 2028.
Mr. Deve encouraged members to lay a strong and strategic foundation for what he described as an extensive and nationally significant planning process.
He underscored the importance of early coordination, careful planning and inclusive engagement to ensure a celebration befitting the historic occasion.
Briefing members on the significance of the anniversary, Mr. Deve noted that the 50th Independence Anniversary will not only commemorate the nation’s journey over the past five decades but also serve as a powerful platform to promote unity across the provinces.
He highlighted that the celebrations will honour the Solomon Islands’ rich and diverse cultural heritage, strengthen relationships among provinces, and deepen partnerships with development partners and friends.
He further emphasized that the Golden Jubilee presents an opportunity to foster cultural exchange, showcase the nation’s identity, and reaffirm its enduring values of unity, peace and prosperity as a Christian nation.
Central to the Taskforce’s immediate role is the development of a comprehensive roadmap to guide preparations for the major celebrations.
Mr. Deve explained that the roadmap will outline key milestones, proposed national events and strategic priorities to ensure a coordinated, inclusive and memorable commemoration.
The 50th Independence Anniversary will mark five decades since the Solomon Islands gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1978.
Government leaders have described the Golden Jubilee as a landmark national event—one that will celebrate achievements to date while reflecting on the country’s journey and aspirations for the next 50 years.
Further details regarding planned events and public engagement initiatives will be announced as the National Taskforce advances its work.
